Description

Use: like red fir, it is a wood that is widely used for construction. It is also used for the production of sound boxes for many musical instruments and for the strips used in the inner cores of pianos.

Characteristics: unlike Red Fir, Silver Fir is not a resinous wood, and therefore is less resistant to weathering. Due to this characteristic, its needles and bark are easily attacked by wood-boring insects. It is primarily yellow-white in colour.

Drying: it dries extremely fast, so care must be taken to keep the wood from splitting. Silver Fir does not tend to warp.   

Surface: since it has no resin pockets and residues, this wood can be easily worked and, compared to Red Fir, it is easier to produce polished surfaces. Suitable for nearly all types of varnishes, stains and polishes.

Gluing: all types of joints can be easily made and are strong.
