Description

Use: much appreciated for inlay work, carving and carpentry for frames and musical instruments. Particular uses for matches, pencils and desks. Once used for clogs, toys and brushes.

Characteristics: heartwood varies from pale white to light brown. The annual rings tend to be thin with uniform colour. Knots and other defects are rare. It is easily attacked by fungi and only partially resists the attacks of wood-boring insects. Linden trees can grow up to a thousand years old.

Drying: drying is easy and not excessively long.

Surface: straight grain with a fine texture and natural shine. Widely used with waxes and oils to bring out its structure in carved works.

Gluing: very strong with any type of joint.
