Description

Use: in America, much it used for the construction of ships and shipyards. Also used for the production of paper. Given the scarcity of European Elm, it is often used as a substitute.

Characteristics: sapwood greyish or brownish, heartwood brown with reddish hues. Elm trunks are very delicate, easily attacked by insects and prone to diseases.

Drying: must be done carefully, given its tendency to tear.

Surface: intertwined fibre, irregular and somewhat coarse texture, with large pores. For this reason, a sealer should be used before applying stains, varnishes and other surface treatments.

Gluing: joints with screws or nails require pre-drilling to avoid tearing.
