Description

Use: very decorative wood, especially the type with a shinier structure, much sought after in the high-end furniture industry and shipyards. Being a rather elastic and bendable, but solid, wood, it is often used for chairs and decorative elements both in the form of solid pieces and veneers. Used in particular for pianos, rifle butts and airplane propellers. In Italy, it is often known as Noce Canaletto.

Characteristics: whitish or yellowish-brown sapwood, it is clearly differentiated from the heartwood. The size of the sapwood can vary greatly: narrow in forest-grown trees and broad in those growing outside of forested areas. The heartwood can have various shades of brown, sometimes verging on chocolate with various dark shades.

Drying: to be dried slowly to avoid deformation and warping.

Surface: from average to very hard, fibrous, usually straight-grained, sometimes figured. Easy to use with all varnishes. It is advisable to polish it if sealers are used.

Gluing: all types of joints are easy to use; if using glues with a high concentration of alkali, stains may appear.
