Description

Use: wood particularly suitable for shipbuilding of all kinds: from boats to on-deck structures, decks and deck houses. Also used for high-end furniture.

Characteristics: The sapwood is thin and whitish. The heartwood has yellowish-golden (so-called Golden Teak) or yellow-brown hues, sometimes with greenish and darker tones (so-called "Striped Teak") which give it a very decorative appearance. The wood, grown in areas of limited altitude in Java, is substantially fatty with an oily surface, which gives it considerable resistance to moisture and infestations of plant parasites and insects.

Drying: dries rather easily but must be done slowly.

Surface: grain basically straight, although sometimes it can be wavy or intertwined. Coarse and irregular texture with moderate or low natural shine.

Gluing: gluing is difficult due to the oil content of the wood. For joints with screws or nails, pre-drilling is recommended.
