Description

Use: wood with many uses in furniture and furnishings. Also appreciated for shipbuilding and shipyards due to its resistance. In areas of wine cultivation, it was used to support shoots and was thus rather common in the countryside.

Characteristics: sapwood narrow with a light greyish-yellow colour. The heartwood is reddish brown, sometimes with darker shades. A rather hard wood, moderately heavy and sufficiently elastic. Also resistant to water. Elm was seriously threatened by the proliferation of a fungus called "Ceratocystis Ulmi", which caused a significant decline in its numbers.

Drying: must be done slowly and carefully as the wood has a strong tendency to warp and crack. After drying becomes particularly stable.

Surface: medium or coarse texture with straight grain. Easy stained and varnished.

Gluing: all types of joints are good and effective.
