Description
Use: used for construction and carpentry and for floors. Widely used in the flooring of velodromes. Given its strength, it is prized for outdoor constructions such as docks and piers. Once it was also used for slats in chemical containers.
Characteristics: the sapwood is pale whitish-yellowish. The heartwood is reddish-brown. Wood commonly contains minerals and small colour defects.
Drying: drying must be done slowly.
Surface: coarse texture with grain both straight and crossed. Working the surface can be complex since this wood repels several types of lacquer and varnish. Due to its content of fatty-oily substances, staining is problematic.
Gluing: the wood can be worked and glued quite easily. However, care must be taken during working to avoid inhaling dust, which can irritate the nasal mucosa.
